Losing a child in their first year of life is a tragedy no parent should have to face. Education, prenatal care and holistic solutions are needed to ensure all babies celebrate their 1st birthday. On behalf of our clients and vendors, B&Y is donating to Healthier Moms and Babies to support the education and assistance they offer at-risk, low-income mothers and families in our community.
What’s infant mortality?
Infant mortality is considered the death of a child under one year of age for any reason. The infant mortality rate is an important indicator of overall community health as it’s affected by poverty, education and societal structures. The U.S. infant mortality rate is consistently higher than other developed countries. Unquestionable disparities exist as African American families suffering this loss significantly more than any other race in the U.S. Due to structural inequality, structural racism and other contributing factors, African American families are 2.3 times more likely to lose a child within the first year of life. While progress has been made, much more needs to be done to reduce the infant mortality rate for every American family.
The leading causes of infant mortality include:
- Low birthweight
- Congenital malformations
- Maternal complications
- Accidents (unintentional injuries)
- Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)
Reducing the infant mortality rate involves everything from national and statewide policy changes to education and assistance for vulnerable and at-risk mothers. Healthier Moms and Babies is working to address this preventable crisis in Allen County, IN.
